My project used the lengths of surgical cases to create different operating room schedules by minimizing the minutes of empty operating room time and case delays based on a weighing penalty. Those schedules were then simulated using the case lengths and compared to a baseline of scheduling by the average case length. There are a range of weighing penalties that had similar delays and empty operating room time as the baseline. The schedules based on penalties balanced out the total delayed cases, rather than seeing more at the end of the day. Different case orders were also tested and found that in some schedules, there were significant differences in completion time.
