Incoming Paperwork for Desk Staff

I have worked for the Office of Access Management at Mayo Clinic Health System since March 2023. I am passionate about the work I do and wanted to find a way to apply my health information knowledge learned in this program to my everyday tasks. My current supervisor, Samantha, at MCHS agreed to host for my capstone project.

A handful of times over the last six months, the care team assistants or CTAs have approached my team at the desk and asked if we thought to collect a release of information from patients who dropped off forms such as FMLA. I proposed to Samantha that to apply my HIM knowledge with OAM practices, I could create a standardized process for incoming paperwork for OAM and registration staff. Samantha told me that was a hot topic among leadership a few months back but got put on hold due to other projects happening. OAM has been spotlighting cross training for several months, and it is important to standardize as many processes as possible to effectively cross train.  I created a proposal, and it was then approved by the operations manager and coordinator.
