Electronic manufacturers have a wide variety of environmental regulations which need to be met for products that are shipped around the globe. One critical regulation is the restriction of hazardous substance (RoHS) regulation, which restricts 10 hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and hexavalent chromium which can be used in electronic products. There has been adoption of the RoHS regulation by different countries globally. The RoHS regulation requires extensive bill-of-material (BOM) data analysis for a manufacturer to comply with the directive. As a result, this client-based project had two primary objectives, which were the development of a system and an algorithm to optimize this BOM data analysis process required for RoHS. A novel tool and optimization algorithm were developed from this research. The results of this project were utilized by the client to optimize their RoHS compliance program.
