Optimizing Revenue Cycle Management: A Data-Driven Approach to Reducing Claims Denials

Program: Health Information Management Technology Bachelor's Completion
Host Company: Gundersen Health System
Location: La Crosse, Wisconsin (remote)
Student: Brooke Gander

The primary objective of this internship project was to improve revenue cycle management by reducing claims denials and enhancing third-party reimbursement. Through a meticulous analysis of denied claims data, collaboration with healthcare staff, and in-depth research into payer-specific requirements, I pinpointed key areas for improvement. Subsequently, targeted solutions will be designed to minimize future denials, ultimately streamlining the revenue cycle process and improving financial outcomes.

The capstone project was a transformative experience that significantly enhanced my educational journey and has had a profound impact on my career trajectory. By immersing me in a real-world revenue cycle management project, the capstone provided me with the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts learned in the classroom to practical challenges faced by healthcare organizations.

One of the most valuable aspects of the capstone was the depth of knowledge and skills I gained in revenue cycle management. Through meticulous data analysis, root cause identification, and solution development, I acquired a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved in optimizing revenue cycle processes. This experience not only honed my analytical and problem-solving skills but also instilled in me a strong appreciation for the critical role that effective revenue cycle management plays in ensuring the financial sustainability of healthcare organizations
