I completed a capstone project at Aurora BayCare Medical Center titled “Revising Acute Document Scanning Procedure.” Under the guidance of Linda Ho, RHIT, Health Information Supervisor and Site Privacy Officer, I focused on enhancing the existing scanning procedure used by the Health Information Management (HIM) department.
The primary objectives were to:
- Eliminate redundant and non-pertinent information.
- Clarify confusing steps and ensure continuity.
- Improve the overall readability and usability of the document.
- Reduce the length of the procedure by removing unnecessary sections.
This project allowed me to apply the competencies acquired during my Health Information Management and Technology (HIMT) program, particularly in data management, information governance, and organizational leadership. The experience honed my technical skills and provided valuable insights into the practical aspects of HIM operations within a healthcare setting.
My capstone project at Aurora BayCare Medical Center was an enriching experience. Working on revising the Acute Document Scanning Procedure allowed me to directly apply the skills and knowledge from my HIMT program to a real-world challenge. Collaborating with the HIM team and under the mentorship of Linda Ho and Betty Rockendorf, I was able to streamline processes, enhance data integrity, and contribute to more efficient healthcare operations. This internship not only solidified my passion for health information management, but gave me valuable insight into the field. This hands-on experience, as well as the strong educational basis UWGB’s HIMT program provided, brings me confidence as I step into my career in HIM.
