Sepsis from Triage to Reimbursement

My capstone, “Sepsis: From Triage to Reimbursement,” tackled the revenue losses RWHC’s rural Wisconsin hospitals face with sepsis care by mapping the entire ED-to-billing workflow, identifying gaps in triage screening, clinical documentation, and denial management, and translating those findings into a four-hour, four-part training program. Deliverables—micro-learning modules, Smart Phrase templates, an EMR-embedded discharge checklist, and AI-based denial-prevention rules—aim to boost screening compliance, slash documentation queries, and cut sepsis-related denials, with an expected $82 K financial gain in the first 90 days.

This capstone was a great experience, one I thoroughly enjoyed, and it polished clinical documentation and revenue integrity for RWHC while confirming that UW-Parkside’s HIM program has fully prepared me to advance both quality care and financial performance.

I appreciate the great experience that I had throughout my capstone project, especially the support and help I have received from Renee and Professor Rockendorf.
