Social Media Influence on Stock Market Fluctuation

Program: Data Science Master's Degree
Location: Not Specified (remote)
Student: Amber Toews

The effects of social media on stock market prices were examined in my project. Additionally, words and phrases were analyzed to determine the tone of the social media post. Following that, the stock market’s performance was compared to tweet frequency/sentiment and a model constructed to predict if a stock market price will rise or fall. The social media platform I will be using to text mine from will be Twitter and I will use Yahoo Finance for stock prices.

The objectives for this project are as follows:

  1. Using Twitter, the frequency and sentiment of tweets mentioning the following stocks: Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Tesla (TSLA), and Google (GOOG/GOOGL) during the period of 1/1/2019 – 12/31/2019.
  1. Determine the connection between Twitter sentiment and stock price fluctuations by using the data science approach of classification.
  1. Create a data science model to forecast changes in stock price caused by sentiment and frequency on Twitter.
