I worked with a researcher at Stanford to investigate whether surgical services utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic was affected by patient social determinant factors such as race and economics. The study used medical claims data from a database maintained by a company that runs the largest online electronic data exchange for medical insurance in the United States. The study found some differences in proportions and percent change amongst the subcategories in categories such as race and economic stability. Results were presented using a chi-square analysis of proportions, time series, and percent change measurements for various time periods.
