My ultimate goal for this review paper is to delve into the future of sustainability from the lens of anaerobic digestors and clean energy. Focusing on developments within the Great Lakes region, including real conversations with an expert in the field, I’ve pulled research and development papers describing what anaerobic digestion systems are and what they accomplish, focusing on projects and studies completed from 2005-2025. This paper’s main goal is to address the gap in education surrounding anaerobic digestion systems through an in-depth review, and a first-hand account of current projects taking place within the Great Lakes region. My goals surrounding this project are to further research efforts concerning anaerobic digestion systems, garner development of anaerobic digestion systems in the Great Lakes to further clean energy progress, and to help create energy security within the area.
