The Journey to Net Zero: Action required to achieve Science Based Targets

Program: Sustainable Management Master's
Location: Not Specified (onsite)
Student: Laura Kowalski

This paper was completed to understand what organizations need to do and to influence to be successful in meeting their Science Based Targets (SBTs). The research was completed through eight interviews with multinational organizations committed to SBTs. Renewable electricity is most mature and cost-effective carbon free option and has therefore been the first step that organizations have taken in their SBT journey. Further advancement to net zero will require significant investment, and more importantly, a change in mindset. Comparing carbon free energy options to fossil fuels is not valid; we have exhausted the inexpensive fuel options left on Earth. Organizations need to accept the increased cost to operate in a new decarbonized world.
