Understanding Ethics and HIPAA in the Workplace

Program: Health Information Management Technology Bachelor's Completion
Host Company: MSW-Aurora BayCare Medical Center
Location: Green Bay, Wisconsin (onsite)
Student: Lindsay Holtermann

My internship at Aurora BayCare Medical Center focused on enhancing my understanding of Health Information Management (HIM) principles and their practical application within a healthcare setting. A key component of the project involved developing and preparing a PowerPoint presentation called “Understanding Ethics and HIPAA in the Workplace” that was created for non-medical staff. This aimed to reinforce the importance of ethical conduct and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Beyond this core project, the internship provided diverse experiences, including updating important clinic documents, training new hires, and shadowing various roles within Health Information Management and Compliance. These experiences provided a comprehensive view of HIM operations and the importance of ethics and HIPAA in healthcare.

This experience has been very rewarding and allowed me to be able to view the different areas of HIMT. I am wanting to pursue a career as an HIM Manager and am planning to take the RHIA exam after graduating.
