Editor’s note: This blog announcement was published in February 2016, shortly after the UW Health Information Management and Technology program became a HIMSS Approved Education Partner.

The 100% online University of Wisconsin Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management and Technology (HIMT) has been named an Approved Education Partner of the Healthcare Information and Management System Society (HIMSS).

As an Approved Education Partner, UW HIMT joins an exclusive group of organizations offering HIMSS-approved education and training programs that provide students with advanced knowledge in health care and health IT.

HIT students can sit for HIMSS credentialing exams

Partnership with HIMSS demonstrates that the online program’s health information technology track curriculum prepares students to sit for the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CAHIMS) and Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS) exams, both sponsored by HIMSS.

“We are extremely proud and excited to accept this distinction,” said Wil Limp, former program manager of UW HIMT. “Accreditation by CAHIIM assured our students that the health information management (HIM) track at UW-Green Bay met rigorous academic quality and competency standards, as well as prepared them for HIM certification exams. Now, with the HIMSS partnership, we can give the same assurance to our health IT track students.”

HIMSS applauded the UW HIMT program specifically for providing a rigorous and well-rounded health IT education and for offering adult learners the opportunity to gain the knowledge they need to succeed in today’s technology-focused healthcare environments.

Surging enrollment in HIMT

In addition to being recognized by prestigious professional associations, the UW HIMT program has seen impressive growth since its first students enrolled more than three years ago. During 2015 alone, student enrollment surged by 99 percent, due to the large demand for health information professionals and UW HIMT’s online format, which makes it a convenient choice for busy, working adults.

“Whether students choose to pursue the HIM or the health IT track—or both—they will learn skills that position them to be leaders and influencers in the healthcare industry,” Limp said.
