Marty Weninger is a Teaching, Learning and Technology Specialist at UW-Stout who is currently enrolled in the Master of Science: Information Technology Management program. Marty is seeking a graduate certificate in IT Leadership, which is one of three graduate certificates available in the program. While students may take graduate certificates individually like Marty, those who complete all three certificates plus a capstone receive the master’s degree.
Marty, who is one of several Universities of Wisconsin employees completing a degree program through UW Online Collaboratives, recently shared some of his thoughts on his experience in the program so far:
- Why did you decide to enroll in the program?
My decision to enroll began after a meeting with my supervisor at UW-Stout, where we discussed my personal development goals. This conversation inspired me to focus on enhancing my leadership abilities. As an employee, I have firsthand experience with the high-quality instruction at UW schools, so I explored their programs online. When I discovered the IT Management program, it felt like a natural fit for my role as a Teaching, Learning, and Technology Specialist.
- How did the online format influence your decision to enroll?
The online format was essential in my decision. Having completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as a graduate certification, all online, I know I learn best in this environment. The flexibility allows me to study at my own pace and revisit material whenever needed, which is crucial for balancing work and education.
- What do you like most about the program?
What I appreciate most is the program’s modular structure, which allows me to earn certificates as stepping stones toward the degree. This approach lets me manage my workload effectively, avoid feeling overwhelmed, and steadily build skills that enhance my resume. I can choose to progress quickly or take my time, depending on my schedule and goals.
- Have you learned any specific skills that you were able to immediately apply to your job?
Many skills from the program have been immediately applicable to my job. For example, I used my finance knowledge during staff senate activities and innovation projects. The communication skills I gained have improved my training sessions with staff, and I recently developed a full-day seminar on teaching AI skills to professors.
- Where do you hope to be in five years, career-wise?
In five years, I hope to continue working with my current team, growing as a leader and promoting the integration of AI skills in the classroom. I aim to contribute to UW-Stout’s Leading Educational Advancement through Polytechnic Pathways (LEAPP) innovation initiative, helping to introduce new ideas and energize the campus by expanding enrollment through innovative pathways.
- What advice would you give to prospective students?
My advice to prospective students:
- Review course syllabi. Honestly assess how each fits your schedule and lifestyle.
- Decide whether you want to pursue one certificate, multiple certificates, or the full master’s degree in ITM, based on your long-term goals.
- Consider your financial plan. Explore options like veteran benefits, employer assistance, scholarships, and student loans [to finance your education].
- Be prepared to work independently. Online learning requires strong motivation and time management. Set aside dedicated time each week for assignments, and remember that success depends on your commitment.
- Ask for help when you need it. Professors are there to support you and want to see you succeed. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.
