Changing careers can feel intimidating, especially if you’re moving into a new industry. But if you’re passionate about helping others improve their quality of life, a health and wellness career may be closer than you think.

Many professionals from different fields have experience that translates into wellness roles. Whether you’ve spent years teaching students, caring for patients, or supporting employees, you’ve likely developed skills that organizations need as they invest more in employee well-being, community health, and wellness leadership.

If you’re thinking about a career in health and wellness, the University of Wisconsin Master of Science in Health and Wellness Management can help you build the leadership, strategic planning, and evidence-based wellness skills to transition into the field. The 100 percent online program also offers three stackable graduate certificates, allowing you to earn valuable credentials while progressing toward your master’s degree.

Building on Your Existing Skills

Today’s organizations recognize that wellness extends beyond physical health, with successful wellness programs taking a more holistic approach to focus on overall well-being. According to Wellable’s 2026 Employee Well-Being Industry Trends Report, 76 percent of respondents surveyed are investing more in mental health programs, while 55 percent are investing more in financial wellness like student loan assistance and increased retirement contributions.

As a result, employers across health systems, corporations, and nonprofits are seeking professionals who can develop, lead, and evaluate wellness initiatives.

“Wellness programs are crucial for everyone,” said Eric Ziarek, the wellness program manager for employee health and wellness at Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee. “No matter your role, if you aren’t at your best, if you’re not performing as well as you could, then whatever it is that you’re doing would suffer.”

Here are a few professions that can provide an excellent foundation for a shift into health and wellness management:

Educators

Teachers, instructional coaches, and school administrators spend their careers helping others learn, grow, and succeed. Many of the skills educators use daily translate naturally into wellness careers, such as communicating with diverse audiences, developing educational programs, and building supportive communities.

As schools, universities, nonprofits, and community organizations place greater emphasis on wellness education, teachers can apply these strengths in new ways. Educators may find opportunities in workplace wellness, community health organizations, nonprofit leadership, employee well-being, or health education programs.

The Foundations of Health and Wellness-Graduate Certificate builds on these skills while introducing health and wellness principles. You’ll learn how to use evidence-based practices to address population health issues, as well as justify the value of a culture of well-being as part of a community.

Nurses and Healthcare Professionals

Many nurses enter healthcare because they want to improve people’s lives. Over time, however, some discover they’re interested in making an impact beyond working directly with patients.

A transition into health and wellness management allows healthcare professionals to leverage their clinical knowledge while focusing on prevention, organizational wellness, or program leadership. Nurses bring crucial experience, including patient education, care coordination, health advocacy, and an understanding of healthcare systems.

Through the Leadership in Health and Wellness-Graduate Certificate, you can expand these strengths with coursework that develops the skills needed to engage teams and manage wellness initiatives.

“To be an effective wellness leader, you need to understand what leadership means, and that constantly is being measured and changing,” Ziarek said.

Courses on strategic management and human behavior in organizations will help prepare you for leadership opportunities in a variety of healthcare and wellness settings, where you can build and lead a team of stakeholders to plan and develop a culture of well-being.

Human Resources Professionals

Human resources has evolved to include more than hiring and benefits administration. Today, many HR professionals play an important role in employee engagement and organizational well-being.

If you’ve helped implement employee assistance programs, organized wellness initiatives, or worked to improve workplace culture, you already have experience that’s highly relevant to health and wellness careers. Transferable skills include leadership development, organizational communication, program coordination, and change management.

Coursework in the Improving Health with Data and Policy-Graduate Certificate allows you to deepen your understanding of wellness strategy, health policy, and evidence-based practices while preparing to lead comprehensive workplace wellness programs. You’ll be able to analyze regulations and their influence on health outcomes while making decisions grounded in ethics and social responsibility.

Prepare for Your Next Career Move

If you’re looking for a career where you can make a meaningful impact while building on your current experience, health and wellness management may be a suitable choice for you.

The UW Health and Wellness Management program prepares you by exploring topics such as population health, leadership, wellness program planning, health policy, and data-informed decision-making. The program is designed for professionals from a variety of backgrounds who want to expand their expertise while continuing to work.

“With a lot of other programs, you’re either doing health and wellness or how to earn a paycheck, not usually both. I really love the fact that this program marries those two things,” said Garrett Stangel, a UW Health and Wellness Management student and owner of Balance Fitness.

Because the program is 100 percent online, students can balance coursework with their professional and personal responsibilities. The stackable graduate certificates also give you the flexibility to build skills over time. Whether you’re an educator who wants to promote healthier communities or a nurse ready to move into leadership, the right credentials can help prepare you for a rewarding new career.
