MADISON, Wis.—12/15/2023—Universities of Wisconsin Online Collaboratives, in partnership with three UWs, is now offering an online Health Information Management and Technology Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. The 8-course, 24-credit program gives students the opportunity to increase their knowledge in health information practices.

The universities participating in the certificate program are UW-Green Bay and UW-Parkside, with administrative support provided by UW Online Collaboratives. Students take courses taught by faculty from both partner campuses in a 100 percent online learning environment.

Headshot of Misty Neal“The HIMT Certificate opens a gateway to a dynamic and fulfilling career in healthcare, providing students with a specialized skill set that is both efficient and valuable. This program not only offers a streamlined and focused approach to health information management but also presents a viable alternative for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree. Because our certificate is accredited by CAHIIM, potential employers know the academic rigor of your achievements. Moreover, with a bachelor’s degree and this certificate, you can sit for professional credentials through the American Health Information Management Association, the gold-standard for our field.”

—Misty Neal, MBA, RHIA-HIMT Program Director at UW-Green Bay

The certificate’s curriculum consists of 8 courses from the HIMT bachelor’s program. Students will learn about digital literacy, billing and coding, and human resource management within healthcare. The certificate is ideal for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree and want to advance their career or transition into health information management and technology. Courses are offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters, and tuition is the same no matter where a student lives.

The UW HIMT program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Similar to the bachelor’s program, students who complete the certificate can sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification and other credentialing exams offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

The new certificate is designed to meet the increased demand for healthcare workers with a background in health information and technology.

“Through this certificate, students gain the essential knowledge and expertise necessary to navigate the evolving landscape of health information, empowering them to make meaningful contributions to the industry while enjoying a quicker path to professional success,” Neal said.

With nearly all healthcare facilities utilizing electronic health records, these facilities are in need of HIM professionals who can bring their expertise to the forefront. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for medical records technicians is projected to grow 8 percent from 2022 to 2032, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Medical records technicians are also considered among the top jobs in the country.

The HIMT certificate joins a growing number of online degree and certificate programs for adult learners who require flexibility to further their education.
