Examines the American systems of Criminal Law and Justice in socio-historical context. Presents the three branches of the Criminal Justice system (Law Enforcement, Courts, Corrections) and critiques them against the backdrop of five cultural philosophies of criminal justice. Explores how crime is defined and measured, and how social sciences theorize causes of crime and crime patterns. (ER, 3 credits)
